1 big thing: Utah's AI boom
Utah is the top-ranked state for per-capita AI use, per a report last week from Anthropic.
Why it matters: It's another sign that the state is an emerging AI hub.
By the numbers: Utah's usage of Claude, Anthropic's AI platform, is 3.78 times higher than its share of the U.S. working-age population, the report found.
- That's far ahead of the next highest state — California, at 2.13 — and narrowly behind only Wsahington, D.C., at 3.82.
- New York (1.58) and Virginia (1.57) filled out the top five.
Zoom in: Utah's most distinctive topic discussed with Claude is AI itself, with statewide queries to "help develop, debug, and implement machine learning and AI systems" being asked 1.4 times as frequently as the national average, per the report.
- Utahns also use AI at an above-average rate for "technical assistance and computational support for scientific research projects."
- Data from the University of Maryland show a growing demand for AI skills in Utah workplaces.
The intrigue: Salt Lake also leads the nation for AI use in romance.
Zoom out: Anthropic global data shows workers adopting AI faster than past tech advances — but uneven adoption threatens to worsen existing inequalities, with wealthier countries using it more than poorer countries, Axios' Ina Fried reports.
What they're saying: ""If the productivity gains are larger for high-adoption economies, current usage patterns suggest that the benefits of AI may concentrate in already-rich regions," Anthropic said in the report.
2. Utahns among the latest to sleep
Utahns have one of the latest bed times in the U.S., Apple Watch data shows.
By the numbers: The average bed time for Utahns is 11:47pm and the average duration of sleep is 6.7 hours — based on watch data from adults who shared info with the Apple Heart and Movement Study.
- Just a handful of states — including Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky, New York and Washington, D.C. — go to bed later than us.
Reality check: Most people aren't getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, which impacts mood and health.
- The national average is 6 hours and 40 minutes.
What they found: Participants with the most consistent bedtimes throughout the week slept for 40 more minutes and spent 36% less time awake during sleep periods, compared to other Apple Watch wearers.
- They also averaged 57% more time exercising.
What they're saying: "The most important thing" for sleep hygiene is going to bed at the same time daily, sleep medicine physician Shalini Paruthi tells Axios.
The intrigue: Hawaiians were the earliest to bed (11:06 p.m.) but also slept the least (6 hours, 31 minutes).
- D.C. residents had the latest bedtime (11:56 p.m.) followed by New Yorkers (11:53 p.m.).
