Axios Northwest Arkansas

May 26, 2022
Hi y'all. We've made it to Thursday.
โ๏ธ The weather: Again with the likely rain. High near 62.
๐จ Situational awareness: Josh Duggar was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after being convicted on child pornography charges late last year.
Today's newsletter is 879 words โ a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: COVID cases creeping up

There's now an average of more than 105,000 new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. each day, according to the New York Times.
- That's the most since February at the end of the Omicron wave.
Yes, but: The two-week change in cases per 100,000 residents has declined in six states.
Zoom in: Active cases are still on the rise in Arkansas, albeit at a slower rate than neighboring Missouri and Louisiana.
By the numbers: The Arkansas Department of Health reported 3,253 active cases Tuesday, up 726 compared to the week before โ a 29% increase in raw case numbers.
- Benton County had 282 active cases, and Washington County had 369 as of Tuesday, according to the department.
- Hospitalizations due to COVID were above 70 on Monday for the first time in more than a month, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports.
Threat level: The rise in cases comes just before Memorial Day weekend, when many people travel or gather for the unofficial start of summer.
- Doctors recommend that people continue to wear masks in large gatherings, especially indoors.
- Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, encouraged those living in communities designated yellow or orange to consider wearing masks again in indoor public spaces.
- All of Arkansas is currently rated green.
Of note: About 56% of Arkansans over age 5 are fully vaccinated.
๐ญ Our thought bubble: Unfortunately, Washington, D.C., had the largest two-week change in cases, and both Alex and Worth were there last week. Eek!

2. Charted: Mass shooting history

The graphic above illustrates a chilling history of modern mass shootings in the U.S.
The big picture: There have been 213 mass shootings โ those involving four or more people โ this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. That's more than there have been days of the year.
Zoom in: There have been four mass shootings in Arkansas so far in 2022, resulting in seven fatalities and 35 people injured. That does not include the shooters.
- Feb. 12: Little Rock, where three were injured and one died.
- March 19: Dumas, where 27 were injured and one died.
- April 21: Mountain View, where all four died.
- May 12: Hot Springs, where three were injured and one died.
3. ๐ฎ Taco truck turned takeout treat

๐ Worth here. Mo's Tacos and Churros did the classic restaurant thing: Start as a food truck, build a following, then open a restaurant.
- The brick-and-mortar opened at 329 N. West Ave., in November 2019.
The setup: True to its taqueria roots, the restaurant isn't much bigger than the truck. There are a few stand-up counters, but most food is takeout.
- However, Mo's shares space with Eros Teatro next door; my wife and I were told we could sit in its dining room or on the patio. The patio makes a romantic backdrop for any couple.
- Mo's menu is straightforward, with street tacos, burritos, quesadillas, elote and churros.
The verdict: The street tacos are simple โ meat, onion, cilantro and cheese in some cases. Each packed a delicious punch in a small package.
- We tried the chicken, steak and cheese, and al pastor (about $3 each). The steak and cheese are praiseworthy.
- Margarita? โ Chips and salsa? โ โ The churro sundae? โ โ โ
The bottom line: Mo's is worth checking out if you haven't already.
- It's open 5pm to midnight Tuesday and Wednesday, 5pm-3am Thursday through Saturday, and 5-11pm on Sunday. Itโs closed on Monday.

4.๐ค Arkansans place $136 million in bets

Americans have wagered more than $125 billion on legal sports bets since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in May 2018, Axios' Jeff Tracy writes.
State of play: A total of 30 states plus Washington, D.C., have live, legal sports betting markets. Five more have legalized sports betting but are not yet operational.
Zoom in: In-person sports betting in Arkansas started in July 2019 at Oaklawn Casino in Hot Springs. Saracen Casino in Pine Bluff began in October 2019, and Southland Casino in West Memphis began taking bets in January 2020.
- Online sports betting in the state began in early March when Southland launched its desktop sportsbook.
The Natural State is No. 22 in terms of money wagered during the past four years.
Of note: The chart above only includes 25 states, plus D.C. Handle and revenue numbers are not yet publicly available for New Mexico, Washington, North Dakota, Wisconsin and North Carolina.
- The term handle means total money wagered, and revenue is the amount of money kept by sportsbooks out of the amount wagered.

5. Trails' master plan gets refresh
Photo: Worth Sparkman/Axios
The Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission is seeking public input on an updated bicycle and pedestrian master plan.
Why it matters: The plan was last updated in 2015 when the entire trail system was much smaller.
- As it grows, an updated master plan will help guide future projects so that more residents will have access to the trails, and trails will connect to large population centers for shopping and work.
- The regional plan contains 31 Northwest Arkansas communities.
By the numbers: According to the commission, there were about 45 miles of paved trails for cycling and pedestrians in 2015. In 2021, there were 176 miles, a 290% increase.
- Soft surface trails (mountain bike and hiking trails) grew from 55 miles in 2015 to 256 miles in 2021, a 365% increase.
Of note: The survey is only open until May 31.
