1 big thing: Heartland Summit takeaways

Downtown Bentonville was buzzing Thursday with talk of everything from jet packs to tax credits and venture capital to partisan politics.
- More than 350 people from across the U.S. convened at the Record for the Heartland Summit.
Details: Full audience panel discussions included speakers Gov. Asa Hutchinson; Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of the Clinton Foundation; and Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase.
- Breakout sessions on healthcare, education, transportation, energy and the adventure economy gave guests opportunities to dive deeper.
Why it matters: The objective of the summit is to assemble decision-makers and influencers to collectively elevate local and regional economies in the heartland.
The big picture: A recent report from Heartland Forward found that between 2010 and 2019, workers slowly migrated from the coasts to the 20, central-heartland states.
Some key takeaways from the day:
- Dimon encouraged corporate leaders to get involved in local policy and politics.
- Steve Case, CEO of investment firm Revolution, noted that for many companies, there's a strategic advantage to being located in the heartland — rather than the coasts — for both intellectual capital and credibility.
- Hutchinson, who shared the stage with Louisiana's Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, talked about the importance of cooperation between both parties and noted that economic development isn't partisan.
Yes, and: Heartland Forward and Builders + Backers announced they will fund an idea accelerator for Northwest Arkansas.
- A cohort of 10 NWA entrepreneurs will be selected to receive $5,000 "pebble" grants and participate in the accelerator to help spur economic development.
- It's part of an effort announced last year to work with 1,000 entrepreneurs across the U.S.

2. Charted: Abortion choices

Over half of young women in the U.S. ages 18-29 say they would get an abortion if they had an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy — even if it were illegal, Axios' Shawna Chen writes.
Why it matters: Last week's news that the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade has raised questions on what access would look like without a federal right to an abortion.
- Even in states where they remain legal, abortions could be harder to access because those clinics could be flooded with patients from states that have cracked down.
- Women in their 20s accounted for the majority of abortions between 2010 and 2019.
By the numbers: 56% of respondents who identified as a woman said they would seek out an abortion provider even if it was illegal and they had an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy.
The big picture: Legalizing abortion was one of the most meaningful economic policies of the past 50 years for women — research shows it advanced their educational attainment and career achievements, as well as reduced poverty rates for women and families, Axios Markets co-writer Emily Peck reports.
The other side: Opponents argue abortion is morally wrong, and that no benefits outweigh those costs.
Zoom in: There are two locations in the state that provide abortion services: Planned Parenthood in Little Rock can prescribe pills that will start the process. Little Rock Family Planning Services provides both surgical procedures and pills.

4.🔥 Hot coffee tip
Photo: Worth Sparkman/Axios
Here's a coffee shop option from Worth. If you've not tried Basecamp Coffee Co. in Fayetteville, it might be worthy of a stop.
The setup: I met a friend there for a chat recently. It was a nice, quiet but active place and our conversation felt private even though we were sitting near the middle of the cafe.
- I hadn't had lunch, so I was glad to see avocado toast with salmon on the menu ($9).
- I also had a Fireside mocha, which is Mexican chocolate, chile and cinnamon in an espresso ($6) and my friend a matcha latte ($5).
The verdict: The toast, also covered with pickled onions and a vinaigrette style dressing, was on the money. Easy to eat with one hand, and filling enough to sub for lunch.
- The Fireside mocha is where Basecamp really shines, though.
- The combo makes for a spicy cup of hot coffee but is perfect for someone looking for a change of pace.
The matcha latte? My friend didn't comment on the taste specifically, but what she didn't spill in her lap, she drank, so I took that as a good sign.
