Miranda Lambert notched the highest-debuting country album on the Billboard charts last week with the critically acclaimed "Palomino."

Why it matters: Lambert is staking her claim as one of the most successful artists of her generation while swimming against the current of a male-dominated industry.

By the numbers: "Palomino" debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.

• It's the seventh time Lambert's placed an album in the chart's top 10.
• She's also earned 10 No. 1 singles to date.

The intrigue: Lambert co-wrote 14 of the 15 songs on "Palomino." The only exception was her cover of Mick Jagger's "Wandering Spirit."

Be smart: "Palomino" is more than just a commercial hit — it's one of the best-reviewed releases of the year.

• The album has an aggregated critics' score of 83 on Metacritic. But, critically acclaimed albums are old hat for Lambert.
• Paste music critic Ben Salmon wrote in his review: "It may not be her best album, but it is a very worthy entry in what is quickly becoming one of the best recorded catalogs in music. Period."

The latest: Lambert also made news yesterday by announcing the grant recipients for the $25,000 in charitable funds that were donated in her honor for winning the Academy of Country Music Award for Entertainer of the Year. The grants are from the ACM's sister organization ACM Lifting Lives.

• The grant funds will be split between her nonprofit, MuttNation, and the Music Health Alliance's mental health fund. ACM Lifting Lives is also matching the grant to the Music Health Alliance.
• Lambert and her mother founded MuttNation in 2009 to promote the adoption of shelter pets.

While Lambert scaled country music's mountaintop yet again, a new book by music journalist Marissa Moss chronicles the barriers that women continue to face in the genre.

• Moss' book "Her Country" was officially released yesterday following months of anticipation within the music industry.

Why it matters: Moss details how women have had to overcome institutional hurdles that make it difficult to get discovered, sign a record deal or have songs played on the radio.

Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles raised $453,000 in the first 30 days of his bid for Congress, his campaign announced yesterday.

• Ogles was a late entry into the race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper in the newly drawn District 5.

Why it matters: Ogles, who previously worked as an executive at the conservative advocacy group Americans For Prosperity, is among the top contenders for the seat.

• The strong fundraising totals, while unofficial until the next disclosure deadline of June 30, validate his candidacy.

What he's saying: "I am humbled and overwhelmed by the support I've received since entering the race," Ogles said in a press release. "Not only has the fundraising response been incredible, the results in recent straw polls in both Wilson and Marshall Counties, as well as the candidate auction in Williamson County, demonstrate the strength of my grassroots campaign."

Between the lines: Other top candidates in the Republican primary include former Speaker of the House Beth Harwell and retired National Guard Brig. Gen. Kurt Winstead, who is an attorney.

• State Sen. Heidi Campbell is the favorite in the Democratic primary.

Context: Cooper retired from the Nashville area seat he has held since 2003 after the GOP-led legislature changed district boundaries to make the seat favorable to Republicans.

• The Tennessee Republican Party then kicked candidates Morgan Ortagus, Robby Starbuck and Baxter Lee off the ballot because they didn't have a voting history in Tennessee Republican primary elections.
• Starbuck is contesting that decision.
