Author Kristen Hare starts off her latest book with a promise: "For everyone who knows there's so much more to Florida."

Why it matters: People love to pick on the Sunshine State as a monolithic cultural vacuum, but "100 Things to do in Florida Before You Die" takes readers through the weird, whimsy and unexpected delights our state holds, my Axios Tampa Bay colleague Kathryn Varn writes.

What they're saying: Hare, who hails from Tampa Bay, does a ton of research, talks to a bunch of people, and relies on her experiences living in, vacationing around and writing about Florida for over a decade.

• "There's nothing more delightful to me than taking somebody someplace that's been hiding under their nose," she said. "It wasn't a secret. They just didn't see it. … I want to help you see it."

Zoom in: The book includes several South Florida spots, including the Versace Mansion, the Bonnet House and The Guitar Hotel.

• Visit the Sunday market at Wat Mongkolratanaram, the Thai Buddhist temple on the Palm River.
• Order the honey Cuban at West Tampa Sandwich Shop.
• Grab a meal among taxidermy critters at the Linger Lodge in Bradenton.

The first thing you notice when you walk into Ceviche DOZO is that chef Harumi Mattiacci is all by herself, and somehow everywhere at once, my Axios Miami colleague Martin Vassolo writes.

Why it matters: Chef Harumi is the owner and sole employee of this Hollywood Boulevard gem. She greets customers, takes orders and cooks authentic Japanese cuisine at lightning speed.

Dig in: Ceviche DOZO, which opened in 2016, specializes in "fresh simple genuine Japanese food," prepared by a Japanese chef who worked in Japan and in London before moving to South Florida.

The vibe: Hip and laid back, with an edgy '90s alt-rock playlist.

What to try: My wife and I have visited several times. Our favorites include:

• The sushi. If you want authentic sushi, they've got the freshest melt-in-your-mouth fish. The $7 hosomaki rolls are pared-down perfection.
• Chicken katsu curry: Warm, comforting and delicious. The curry is slow-cooked but you'll make quick work of it. ($22)
• Okonomi-style French fries, a Japanese street food with a delicious salty and sweet sauce. ($4)
• Veggie spring rolls: Perfectly crispy and juicy. ($6.50)

Pro tip: Try the rotating drink and food specials. When I went in July, I really enjoyed the aji fry ($5), a breaded mackerel with tonkotsu sauce and tartar.

• The drink menu includes beer, sake and specialty cocktails, like the frozen sake slushie.

Of all the candy in the Halloween aisle, Floridians apparently would pick... Airheads. Seriously?

The big picture: New DoorDash data reveals each state's most uniquely popular Halloween candy, based on which candies each state ordered at a higher rate than the rest of the country.

• Florida's standout feels like an interesting choice in a world of chocolate bars, peanut butter cups and sour gummies.
• I can get behind this: Reese's peanut butter cups are the top candy nationally for the third year in a row.

🤢 My thought bubble: I know this may sound crazy, but I don't like candy outside of chocolate — never have, never will.

• Sour and fruity candies are the bane of my existence. A candy store is my personal hell.
