• The big picture: In one study, professors at the University of Buffalo found that people who lived in neighborhoods with front yards that had eye-catching elements — think elaborate flower beds, inviting porch swings or even colorful garden gnomes — felt more connected to their communities.

👀 Zoom in: The researchers studied nearly 1,000 yards in Elmwood Village — a place in Buffalo that has been named one of America's great neighborhoods.

• Front yards are where people meet and get to know most of their neighbors.
• "Lush plantings, porches or trinkets can capture the attention of passersby and spark conversation. Other lawns say 'stay away,' whether it's through imposing fences or foreboding signs," the researchers write in The Conversation.
