1 big thing: Women break into longevity
The longevity industry is vast β full of influencers, podcasters and venture capitalists spending money and time on cracking the code to living longer.
- But the movement has been dominated by men, from Silicon Valley's Bryan Johnson to writer and researcher Dr. Peter Attia. That's changing, The Wall Street Journal's Amy Dockser Marcus reports (gift link).
The big picture: More female scientists and entrepreneurs are breaking into the space. They're focusing on women's longevity β but might be unlocking secrets for both men and women.
π‘ Case in point: Jennifer Garrison of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging calls ovaries "the canary in the coal mine of aging," WSJ notes.
- That's because the age at which a woman goes through menopause is not only a predictor of her own lifespan, it's also a predictor of how long her daughters, sons and brothers will live.
- Women who experience menopause later are likelier to live longer, as are their family members.
π° The money quote: Ovaries "are a proxy for what is driving aging in everyone," Garrison told the Journal.
What to watch: One of the biggest questions scientists are digging into is the healthspan gap between men and women.
- Women live an average of five years longer than men in the U.S. But they spend a greater share of their old age in poor health.
π "Some suggest it's a consequence of the stress of caregiving, which falls disproportionately on women. Others wonder if menopause is to blame because when ovaries stop releasing essential hormones, it can speed up biological aging in women," Marcus writes.
- Now, with more money and more talent flowing into studying women's health and longevity, scientists are getting closer to solving these longstanding mysteries.
