1 big thing: Tales behind tats
Last week, we wrote about tattoos gaining popularity as a way to mark milestones or obstacles in life.
- In response, Finish Line readers across the country sent us the stories behind their ink.
Here's a selection of their tattoo tales:

"I am 58 years old. My daughter is 24. We decided this summer to get matching tattoos on our arms. We lived in Los Angeles and had a beautiful bougainvillea plant in our backyard that I just loved. I spent most of my maternity leave with her in the yard staring at those flowers. We decided to get that flower on our arms as an homage to 'our beginning.'" —Shirley Powell, L.A.

"My son died of a glioblastoma in October 2015. This tattoo is to honor his memory. His favorite (spirit?) animal was a blue lobster. The claws are hugging. The right claw has his initials and birth and death years tattooed in old sailor style. The left claw is stretched up to the full moon. There were three supermoons in a row the year he died. The first supermoon, we sat out on the patio at hospice and talked. The second supermoon, he was too ill to go outside so we sat in and watched a movie. On the last one, he died." —Gary Feld, West Redding, Conn.

"I got my tattoo in 2019 when HR51 passed the U.S. House for D.C. statehood, so that I have 'skin in the game.'" —Nancy Groth, D.C.

"My first tattoo at age 64 was invigorating. My brother-in-law had the best line: 'That's a good age to get your first. You should know what you want, and you won't sag too much.' I embraced my second at age 78." —Carl Baum, San Francisco

"[One of my tattoos] is two dancing hummingbirds to represent my sons, Zach and Nick. Fun fact: Hummingbirds are the only type of bird that can fly backwards, and they represent joy, strength, and resilience. I am divorced and wanted something that reminded me of my boys when they are with their dad." —Marguerite Allen, Bedford, Texas
