1 big thing: Halloween brightens nursing homes
A new trick-or-treating trend is bringing joy to older Americans who might typically get left out of Halloween festivities.
- Across the country, nursing homes are hosting trick-or-treating events that invite kids and their parents to visit in costume, collect candy — and share the fun of the holiday with people who might be missing their grandchildren, or might not otherwise get to celebrate.
🌭 Case in point: Creston Village, an assisted living facility in Paso Robles, Calif., threw a Halloween party with candy and hot dogs for the community.
- "We've got about 105 grandmas and grandpas who live here, and they love any excuse for kids to come through," Adam Bramwell, Creston Village's executive director, told KSBY News in San Luis Obispo.
- Kids walked through the dining room in their costumes and gave residents the best dinnertime show.
"Our residents, unless they have grandkids who visit, don't see a lot of kids," Curry Baumgart, activities director at Optalis Health and Rehabilitation in Ann Arbor, Mich., tells Axios. "We're always looking for these intergenerational activities because the energy of the kids is infectious."
- Optalis is hosting a trick-or-treating event tonight with staff members' kids and children from around town.
❤️ Between the lines: "It's beneficial for the kids too to get some exposure" to nursing homes, Baumgart says.
- "These kinds of environments are pretty common now as more people age."
Nursing home Halloween has taken the internet by storm, with parents posting adorable photos and videos of their kids going door to door at senior centers.
- As one parent put it on TikTok: "It brings so many smiles to both the kiddies and the elderly, and who knows, you might just find a little extra joy too."
👀 Tip to go! If you're planning to trick-or-treat with kids or grandkids tomorrow, look for open houses at nursing homes in your area. Many post these events on their websites or social media pages. Several are planned across the country for tomorrow night and the weekend.
