Texts can't replace in-person hangs or phone calls. But they've dramatically lowered the effort and coordination it takes to show people we care.

🧮 By the numbers: Texting is the most common way U.S. adults 54 and younger say they've shown someone they care in the past three months, a new Ipsos poll found.

• About two-thirds of adults in both the 18–34 and 35–54 age groups said they'd expressed care or appreciation via text.
• Texting is popular among older adults, too: 59% of those 55 and older said they'd used a text to show someone they care, compared with the 72% who'd done so with a phone call.

Since it began in 1993, Coaches vs. Cancer — a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches — has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research.

• Within that legacy sits the Legends Gala, an annual event in Norfolk, Va., that last year raised close to $415,000.

🥂 The gala is the brainchild of former Old Dominion University and UVA head coach Jeff Jones, who knows firsthand how ugly cancer is. Jones was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015, and complications from the cancer and its treatment have persisted, including eight ER visits this year, he told The Virginian-Pilot.

• His wife, Axios senior adviser Danielle Decker Jones (DJ), tells us, "I see what he endures, the daily ravages, and what he still manages to accomplish. And I know that he is a warrior."

Zoom in: The idea behind the Legends Gala was to bring iconic coaches and athletes together with Coaches vs. Cancer supporters. The success of last year's event earned Coach Jones ACS' prestigious Volunteer Leadership Award.

• This year's star lineup includes UConn women's head coach Geno Auriemma, UVA men's head coach Ryan Odom and former LA Chargers quarterback Taylor Heinicke. The gala is tomorrow evening.
