1 big thing: What makes people cool
There isn't a ton of research on what makes someone cool. But when we see it, we know it.
- Turns out: Some common traits are shared by most cool people β whether they're athletes, musicians or someone we knew in school.
π The big picture: A new study, published this week in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, surveyed people of different ages, genders and income levels, from 12 countries, on what makes a person cool.
- Researchers found remarkable agreement among respondents β it boiled down to six traits:
- Extroverted.
- Hedonistic.
- Powerful.
- Adventurous.
- Open.
- Autonomous.
πΊπΈ "Cool has been described as an American innovation that spread alongside Coca-Cola, rock-and-roll, iPhones, and other markers of globalization," the study authors write.
- "Our work reveals that as the word of cool has spread, its meaning has crystallized on similar values and traits across the globe."
Between the lines: The study also found that the traits people associate with cool people don't perfectly overlap with the traits they link to "good" people, The New York Times reports.
- Some attributes respondents said good people share are being warm, agreeable, conscientious and calm.
π₯ The winner: "Being capable" emerged as a trait people believe is equally shared by cool and good people.
π Parting shot!

Reader Chris Frates, who snapped this pic while on vacation in the Caribbean, sent it to us with the perfect caption:
- "We found the end of the rainbow, and it's in St. Lucia."
Happy 4th!
