Axios D.C. Weekender

March 13, 2025
🥳 'Twas the night before Friday, and all through D.C., everyone was ready to log off, and party!
👋 Mimi here with that impressive rhyme, plus a line-up of ways to go green for St. Patrick's Day.
Today's newsletter is 701 words — a 2.5-minute read.
1 big thing: Your D.C. Weekend: St. Patrick's Day celebrations
Get your Irish on this weekend with a charmed lineup of St. Patrick's Day events.
Why it matters: You only get one holiday a year to drink green beer. Use it wisely!
State of play: You can paddy hard all weekend long, if you want.
😂 Get in some LOLs at a St. Patty's Day-themed comedy show tomorrow at Atlas Brew Works. The giggling begins at 7:30pm. ($10 at the door)
🛼 Literally roll into the holiday weekend at the Shamrock & Roll roller skating event in Leesburg. The wheels start spinning at 7pm tomorrow, and it's $3-$5 to rent skates.
🎉 Ring in St. Pat's at the Wharf on Saturday from noon-6pm with live music (including bagpipers), Irish dancing and rugby matches on the outdoor big screen. And yes — there will be Guinness and Jameson. (Free)
🇮🇪 Head to Shipgarten in McLean on Saturday from noon-5pm for a Celtic soiree with live music, corn hole and giant Jenga, a photo booth, and a beer fest featuring sips from more than 40 breweries. (Free)
🍻 Did we mention pub crawls? Because there are a lot of 'em.
- Tomorrow: Channel your inner leprechaun at a bar crawl across downtown spots like Penn Social and Hill Country. Beer drinking kicks off at 5pm. ($15-$25)
- Saturday: Hop between more than a dozen Dupont Circle bars starting at 2pm while cheers-ing with discounted drinks and Shamrock Shots (tickets: $25-$30). If you're still standing, there's another crawl ($13-$25) that takes off from Eighteenth Street Lounge at 7:30pm.
Not feeling the leprechaun vibes? Here are more fun things to do this weekend:
🏀 Cheer on your fave team as they vie for a spot at the NCAA tournament during the Atlantic 10 men's basketball championship, taking place at Capital One Arena through Sunday. (Ticket prices vary)
✝️ Catch the musical "Sister Act," kicking off at Ford's Theatre tomorrow and running through May 17. (Ticket prices vary)
🎨 An exhibit of paintings depicting the god Krishna by the Hindu Pushtimarg community will be on display at the National Museum of Asian Art starting Saturday. You can check it out until Aug. 24. (Free)
👵 Get your "Golden Girl" fix at a show that imagines what all the famed ladies — played by actors in drag — would be up to today. It runs Sunday at Capital One Hall. (Ticket prices vary)
2. 🍿 Your at-home streaming guide
Here's what's new on Apple TV+, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, Prime Video, BET+ and Max.
What we're watching: Two crime dramas based in Philadelphia, a documentary on the aftermath of the "Rust" tragedy and a new sci-fi film from the Russo brothers.
🚓 "Dope Thief," available tomorrow on Apple TV+
State of play: Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura star in this crime drama based on Dennis Tafoya's book of the same name.
- The story follows long-time friends living in Philadelphia who impersonate DEA agents to rob small-time drug dealers, but things go awry when they unknowingly rob a stash house belonging to a big-time drug operation.
What they're saying: Show creator Peter Craig said the seasoned actors make the show feel real.
- "It's really the best part of the process because great actors like this are so emotionally intelligent and they'll suddenly feel where something isn't honest or isn't authentic," Craig tells Axios.
🎥 "Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna," available now on Hulu
Zoom in: This documentary focuses on those affected by cinematographer Halyna Hutchins' death, featuring accounts from on-set witnesses and grieving loved ones.
Catch up quick: Hutchins was killed in 2021 on the set of the movie "Rust" when a prop gun held by actor Alec Baldwin fired a live bullet.
- Baldwin was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter following the incident, but a New Mexico judge dismissed the case.
👾 "The Electric State," available tomorrow on Netflix
The vibe: This sci-fi flick about an alternate version of the '90s packs a star-studded cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Giancarlo Esposito, Stanley Tucci, and the voices of Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson and Jenny Slate.
Fun fact: According to press notes, there are more motion capture performances in the film than real humans.
✍️ I'm holed up working on my book this weekend and sadly will not be chugging green beer in Dupont.
