Happy Friday! 52 years ago today, Chicagoans gathered at the Civic Center Plaza (now Daley Plaza) to protest the deteriorating environment. Check out some of the photos.
โ Today's weather: Expect storms and a high of 59. But 60s and 70s over the weekend!
Today's newsletter is 911 words โ a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: Earth Day activities

Happy Earth Day, one day after a new study declared Chicago's air some of the most polluted in the nation.
- All the more reason to check out green-minded events that start today but roll through the weekend and beyond.
๐ Beach lovers: Sign up for one of the Great Lakes Alliance's "Adopt-A-Beach" cleanup events.
๐ฒ Forest fans: Register for an Earth Day cleanup at several Forest Preserve locations, including Schiller Woods today or Beaubien Woods on Saturday.
๐จ Art enthusiasts: Check out the new Sentrock Earth Day mural on the side of the ABC-TV building on State Street.
โป๏ธ Declutterers: Bring electronics, textiles, books, and more for recycling at Brookfield Zoo's Party for the Planet Saturday.
๐ Buggy types: Head to Logan Square's Insect Asylum today for a day-long roster of activities from litter pickup and plant potting to worm classes and a plant exchange.
๐ฉ๐ปโ๐พ Farm lovers: Enjoy Earth Day at Fischer Farm Saturday morning in Bensenville.
Be smart: Neighborhood groups can always call 311 to borrow equipment from the city for community cleanup days.
2. Biking chart of the day

We're the third-best city in the country for biking, according to a new WalletHub analysis.
Why it matters: The study highlights the city's substantial bike infrastructure improvements aimed at getting more Chicagoans to ride.
Yes, but: We're still having trouble sharing the roadways.
- A cyclist died after being hit by a car in the West Loop last weekend, leading Streetsblog Chicago to question why medians were removed from Madison Street.
- The bike lanes on N. Clark Street still have considerable car interference, including double parking in the lanes.
- New bike lanes "to nowhere" are clogging up traffic on the West Side.
๐ฒ Even with all these problems, Chicago is behind just Minneapolis and Portland as the most bike-friendly city in the U.S.
Added bonus: Apple maps just introduced local cycling directions.
3. Photo of the Day: Reader rally

More than 100 people rallied near the Lincoln Park home of Chicago Reader co-owner Leonard Goodman yesterday, urging the defense attorney to allow the paper to become a nonprofit able to access needed grants.
- Attendees included Alds. Carlos Ramรญrez Rosa (35th), Byron Sigcho-Lรณpez) (25th), Pat Dowell (3rd), Rep. Theresa Mah, CTU president Jesse Sharkey, and film director Lilly Wachowski.
Background: We reported on Tuesday that the disagreement is over the makeup of the Reader's potential nonprofit board.
The latest: After the protest, Goodman told Axios he's still waiting for Reader management to discuss his request for more board seats.
- "That is why we are at an impasse," Goodman said.
- Reader management counters that Goodman's proposed board makeup could jeopardize their potential nonprofit status.

5. Best Day Ever: Matt Walsh and Brad Morris

The new film "Unplugging" tells the story of a Chicago couple's attempt to escape their electronic devices and enjoy life. It opens today and is available to stream on April 29.
- The comedy stars Eva Longoria and Matt Walsh, who co-wrote the film with fellow Chicagoan Brad Morris.
The inspiration: A conversation they had about what might happen if we suddenly lost access to our phones and other technology.
- "We realized we had so many stories of our individual dependence on technology and how it has affected our relationships at home and work, and off we went," says Morris, who's appeared in "Great News" and "The Good Place."
Using our smartphones, Axios asked the two former Chicagoans to tell us about their ideal day together in the city.
๐ฅ Breakfast: "Blueberry pancakes, a Dutch baby, an apple pancake and a double order of bacon at the Original Pancake House on Bellevue."
- "RIP Clark St. location."
๐ก Morning activity: "Walking off the aforementioned breakfast, especially in Old Town."
- "Love the houses there."
๐ Lunch: "Athenian Room. The chicken. The fries. Cup of avgolemono. Order of taramosalata."
- "F*** it. Gimme a villager salad and a side of feta, too."

๐ถ Afternoon activity: "Walking around Lincoln Park."
๐ฝ Dinner: "Avec. One of everything, but two orders of the stuffed dates."
๐ Evening activity: "More walking, go see a show at either The Annoyance or Second City."
6. Market Watch: Buyer's Flea Market
Photo: Monica Eng/Axios
It's easy to drive right by the plain West Humboldt Park warehouse that hosts this huge weekend market.
- But once you step inside, you'll find a Mexican-influenced bazaar with hundreds of vendors that's anything but plain.
The wares: Mexican handicrafts, First Communion gowns, toys, instruments, car bumpers, specialty produce (like grasshoppers), music, and a lot more.
The food: Ice cream, tacos, soups, ceviche, cheesy quesabirria tacos, packaged snacks from Mexico, and Oreo churros.

Surprises: A giant car parts aisle where you might just find a replacement for your broken grill or headlight.
- A cool outdoorsy portion in the garage next door.
- A bunch of taco stands line the streets leading out of the market as you drive away.

The bottom line: Started as a tiny market with a few stands in the '80s, the Buyer's Flea Market has grown into a fascinating weekend shopping and eating experience for the whole family.

๐ค Monica is nervous about the weather for Thursday's big Axios Chicago live show on The Hideout porch. But she hopes a little 50 degree weather won't scare Chicagoans away. More details coming Monday.
๐ Justin is feeling nostalgic. The weather is nice and the Bulls are playing meaningful playoff basketball at the United Center this weekend (starting tonight). Let's go, Chicago!
