1 big thing: 🎭 This escape room feels like live theater
Doors of Divergence is a new immersive, time-travel-themed escape room in Charlotte's Belmont neighborhood.
Why it matters: Charlotte's appetite for experiential entertainment keeps growing, from virtual reality experiences to interactive game show concepts.
- Doors of Divergence adds a more theatrical spin — it's a live-actor escape room where players' decisions shape the story.
Catch up quick: The entertainment venue opened in March in Belmont's Sugar Mill development.
- It blends escape-room puzzles with live theater and a time-travel storyline.
How it works: Players choose between two experiences: "Heresy: 1897" and "Madness: 1917." Each lasts about 60 to 75 minutes.
State of play: With both storylines, something has broken time, and players move through interactive rooms solving puzzles in an attempt to restore it.
- Professional actors guide guests through the experience.
Yes, but: Unlike a traditional escape room, the story changes based on player decisions.
The intrigue: That means Doors of Divergence is designed to be replayed, with four possible endings and different story variations depending on previous decisions.
- Our team discovered that you may have to revisit rooms or rethink earlier clues. It's intentionally not linear.

Netflix has a new scary movie just in time for hurricane season.
State of play: In "Thrash," a Category 5 storm slams a South Carolina town, trapping residents in the floodwaters with ravenous sharks are in the water. Yeah, I rolled my eyes, too.
- The movie opens with a warning that storm surge is the deadliest part of a storm, something the National Hurricane Center warns about every year.
