1 big thing: 🍝 Scoop: Goodbye, Good Food
One of Charlotte's best-known restaurants is entering a new chapter as Moffett Restaurant Group owner Bruce Moffett steps away from Good Food on Montford after nearly two decades, handing the space to a longtime MRG employee to launch her own concept.
Why it matters: Good Food on Montford was among a wave of restaurants that helped redefine Charlotte's dining scene when it opened in 2009, with globally inspired small plates and ingredients from local farms — a novel concept in the city at the time, Axios previously reported.
What's happening: Bruce Moffett won't renew Good Food on Montford's lease when it expires at the end of August, the restaurant group tells Axios.
- Instead, Lee Ann Dolcetto, an 18-year Moffett Restaurant Group employee who most recently served as general manager of Stagioni and Sala, will take over the space and open her own restaurant, Bittersweet.
- Charlotte hospitality veteran Tiffany Dunn, formerly of Rare Roots Hospitality (Fin & Fino, Chapter 6), will become the new general manager of Stagioni and Sala.
Zoom out: Good Food has earned national recognition during its run, including a James Beard Award nomination, Unpretentious Palate reported.
2. 🌮 Walk-up taco stand opens in Plaza Midwood
La Vecina, a new outdoor Latino fusion restaurant, has soft opened on Plaza Midwood's Central Avenue.
Why it matters: It's a fresh offering — by the teams behind Moo & Brew and Bocao Sushi — in a fast-changing neighborhood that's often feared to be losing its local charm.
Driving the news: For now, La Vecina is open for dinner with limited hours, 5-10pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and 5pm-midnight Friday-Saturday.
What's next: Thomas says La Vecina will roll out a few updates in the coming weeks.
- Sunday brunch launches Aug. 23.
- Lunch will begin the week of Aug. 24.
- Coffee and breakfast tacos will be added in the fall.
- To-go margaritas will be added, pending logistics and ABC compliance.
What to expect: An open-air restaurant with a neighborhood feel that serves a range of Latino cuisine, says Thomas, who co-owns Moo and Brew next door.
- He's opened La Vecina alongside Bocao Sushi owners Carlos Nuñez and Victor Abad.
- The restaurant's main draw is its walk-up counter, which serves drinks and a limited food menu for takeout or enjoying at the standing tables just behind it.
Dig in: Menu highlights include classic al pastor shaved on-site and served on homemade tortillas, empanadas, mezcal-forward cocktails and margaritas.
🌀 The loop (we're keeping you in it)
News you can use from our partners.
- 🍸 Trade your usual happy hour for Science on the Rocks at Discovery Place on Aug. 14. Enjoy live entertainment, cocktails and three floors of hands-on exhibits during an adults-only evening. Plan your night out.
- 📖 Back-to-school tip: Carving out a few minutes a day to read with your child supports literacy skills and a better understanding of the world — so they can enter the classroom with confidence and curiosity. Build your reading routine.
3. 🏃♀️ Greenway detour starts today
Expect a detour on Little Sugar Creek Greenway near Atrium Health's main campus for a few weeks.
Why it matters: This is a popular stretch of greenway, not just for those who use the trail for exercise, but for those who commute on it as well.
The latest: Atrium is completing wall repairs and grading/erosion improvements near East Morehead, a Mecklenburg County spokesperson tells Axios.
What to expect: Starting today, roughly 0.2 miles of trail will be closed through Aug. 28, according to Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. The closed section starts after Leon Levine Drive and extends just past East Morehead Street.
- There will be a marked detour, which takes greenway users across Leon Levine Drive and north along South Kings Drive.
- Once you've crossed over Morehead Street, you're able to hop back on the greenway.
- If you're heading south toward Freedom Park, you'll hop back on the greenway off Blythe Boulevard near Leon Levine Drive.

🌭 I need a hot dog after reading McKenzie's story about a recent hot dog crawl. My dream is to see food tours pop up in Charlotte's neighborhoods.
🍠 McKenzie thinks a sweet potato crawl also sounds pretty fun.
🍿 Alex just watched the "Primetime" trailer and needs to see this Robert Pattinson performance.
👀 Alexis is curious to see how production will pull off the second Michael Jackson biopic.
🌭 Melissa ate a vegan hot dog from Frankenburger food truck at Birdsong the other day, and she also "blames" McKenzie for the craving.
