Nevin Harrison won gold for Team USA in the first-ever Olympic women's canoe single 200-meter sprint at the Tokyo Games on Thursday.

The big picture: The 19-year-old from Seattle is the only American canoe or kayak sprinter at the Tokyo Olympics. World record holder Vincent-Lapointe, of Canada, won silver and Ukraine's Liudmyla Luzan took bronze.

U.S. Army vet Shawn Morelli rides to gold at Tokyo Paralympics

U.S. Army veteran Shawn Morelli added to her Tokyo Paralympic Games medal count, when the defending champion won the women's cycling time trial C4 on Tuesday morning Japan time.

The big picture: Morelli won Team USA's first medal of the Tokyo Paralympics, with her silver medal performance in the women's C4 3000-meter individual pursuit last week. Morelli took up cycling three years after she lost her sight in her left eye in a 2007 Afghanistan bomb blast, which also left her with neck and nerve damage.

Other drug companies want to help make the vaccines

Generic drug companies have asked Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson to license their COVID-19 vaccine technology to help increase global production, but so far the vaccine makers have given them the cold shoulder.

Why it matters: Other companies are saying they have extra capacity to make more vaccines. Not using that extra capacity could prolong the pandemic throughout the world.

House passes $768 billion defense spending bill

The House approved a $768 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 2022 fiscal year in a bipartisan 316-113 vote on Thursday.

Why it matters: The annual bill, which authorizes Pentagon spending levels and guides policy for the department, would require women to register for the military draft, among other provisions.
