Major League Baseball is moving its 2021 All-Star Game to Denver's Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, on July 13, according to multiple reports Monday night.

Driving the news: After the MLB pulled the event from Atlanta over Georgia's new voting restrictions, a spokesperson for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) said last Friday he would be "burning up the phones" to bring the game to Denver.

What they're saying: Polis said in a statement issued to Axios he's "excited and hopeful" at the prospect of the MLB choosing to play the game in Denver.

  • "It would be good for baseball and good for Colorado," he added.
  • The office of Mayor Michael Hancock (D) said in a text to Axios, "We are excited about the possibility of hosting the All-Star Game and are awaiting MLB's decision."

For the record: Denver last hosted the All-Star Game in 1998.

Of note: A Georgia tourism industry official has said the "estimated lost economic impact" of the MLB's decision to move its All-Star Game from Atlanta is more than $100 million.

  • The MLB did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

McConnell condemns corporate backlash to Georgia voting law

Photo: Alex Wong/Getty Images

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) issued a statement Monday accusing U.S. corporations that oppose the GOP-sponsored law curbing voting access in Georgia of using "economic blackmail to spread disinformation."

Why it matters: Dozens of CEOs and corporations have spoken out in the wake of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signing the new law, which institutes strict new ID requirements, gives the Republican-controlled state legislature more control over elections, and limits the use of ballot drop boxes, among other restrictions.

CEOs are the new lawmakers

American CEOs, forced into politics by cultural trends and staff demands in recent years, are hitting a new phase — actual lawmakers and rule-shapers.

Why it matters: Every CEO has been hit by the radical transformation of what the country demands of its corporations. And with each controversy comes CEOS scrambling, sometimes clumsily, to handle a power many would rather not have.

Democratic Colorado lawmakers push for police accountability

Nearly a year after protests over the death of George Floyd and renewed attention to the 2019 killing of Elijah McClain, Democratic state lawmakers are taking steps to prevent both tragedies from happening again.

The state of play: Their two new bills come amid the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer accused of killing Floyd.
