The Trump administration has systematically restricted access for traditional news outlets while granting privileges to MAGA-aligned media and influencers, reshaping the White House press corps. 

Why it matters: The moves help President Trump control narratives and promote his own campaign by elevating friendly outlets.

The big picture: Access to administration briefings has become a political tool, as it rewards ideological allies and pushes out legacy outlets.

Trump has attempted to consolidate control over information by limiting access to favored media and weakening watchdog journalists, eroding transparency and accountability.

State of play: The administration has dismantled long-standing protocols of interacting with the press. 

The White House removed wire services from its pool rotation after a judge sided with the Associated Press in its lawsuit over access to Air Force One and Oval Office events.

In November, AP and the administration renewed their arguments before a federal appeals court. The litigation is ongoing with a final decision about whether to uphold the initial decision expected this year.

The White House has taken conflicting approaches for AP journalists, granting access for photographers but excluding reporters.

The White House ended press access to a West Wing office used by communications staff, citing national security concerns.

The administration took over the briefing room seating chart, long managed by reporters themselves through the White House Correspondents' Association. 

That shift made way for newfound access for MAGA-friendly outlets and influencers.

Reshuffling Pentagon access: The administration asked CNN, the Washington Post, NBC News and other outlets to leave their workspaces at the Pentagon.

Newsmax, the Washington Examiner, the Daily Caller and the Free Press moved in under a new rotation system.

Restricting Pentagon press: The Defense Department in September required journalists to sign a pledge to not report information that wasn't officially authorized for release, in exchange for access to the Pentagon.

While several conservative outlets refused to sign the pledge, including Fox News and Newsmax, others did. The Pentagon announced a new press corps filled with conservative news outlets in October.

Pentagon day-pass requests now require an hour-by-hour activity summary and a list of people they plan to speak to, an ex-Pentagon press corps member said and Axios has confirmed.

In early December, the Pentagon denied news briefing access for AP and others, claiming they were orientation events for the new press corps, which now includes former Rep. Matt Gaetz.

What to watch: The New York Times and its intelligence reporter Julian E. Barnes sued the Pentagon in December over the pledge.

The AP's lawsuit also could set a precedent for press access rights under future administration.
