The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, endorsed Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Ala.) for re-election on Friday.

Why it matters: Murkowski is facing a primary challenge from Alaska commissioner Kelly Tshibaka, a pro-Trump Republican who has hired a number of the former president's top campaign aides as advisers.

  • Trump vowed last month to campaign against Murkowski, a moderate who was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict him in his second impeachment trial.
  • Trump and McConnell have not spoken since the Jan. 6 Capitol siege. Their rift represents a possible existential crisis for the Republican Party, which is divided between establishment figures like McConnell and Trump-backed populists.

Between the lines: Murkowski was defeated in the 2010 Alaska GOP primary by a Tea Party Republican, but ultimately won in the general election as a write-in candidate.

What they're saying: "Senator Murkowski has…been a champion for conservative values in Washington. She voted to confirm President Trump’s nominations of Justice Gorsuch and Justice Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court, helping to cement a constitutional conservative majority on the nation’s highest court for years to come. She voted in support of hte landmark Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and policies to free businesses from excessive, burdensome regulations."

Trump endorses ally Mo Brooks in Alabama U.S. Senate race

Former President Trump on Wednesday endorsed Rep. Mo Brooks' campaign for U.S. Senate in Alabama, saying in a statement that "few Republicans have as much COURAGE and FIGHT" as the congressman.

Why it matters: Both Brooks and rival candidate Lynda Blanchard, a businesswoman and Trump's former ambassador to Slovenia, had pushed hard to win the endorsement of Trump, who won 60% of the vote in Alabama in the 2020 presidential election.

McConnell walks back rebuke of corporate action over Ga. voting law

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) softened his disapproval of the corporate backlash against Georgia's new voting law, saying Wednesday that businesses "are certainly entitled to be involved in politics," according to the New York Times.

The state of play: McConnell on Monday said that corporations are better off staying out of politics and claimed the dozens of CEOs and corporations that have spoken out against Georgia's law were "taking cues from the Outrage-Industrial Complex."

Trump endorses Sen. Ron Johnson for reelection

Former President Trump on Thursday endorsed Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) for 2022 reelection — despite the fact that Johnson has not publicly announced he will actually launch a bid.

Between the lines: Johnson made a vow when first elected to the Senate that he would only serve two terms. His second term will end in 2022. But the senator in recent months hasn't completely sworn off the idea of another term.
