Ty Garbin, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges earlier this year in an alleged plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, was sentenced to six years in prison Wednesday, according to AP.

Why it matters: It's the first prison sentence handed down in the case. Prosecutors are signaling to the other defendants awaiting trial that Garbin has shared many details about the plan while cooperating with investigators.

The FBI said last October it disrupted a plot to violently overthrow Michigan's government by kidnapping Whitmer.

  • At the time, she had been heavily criticized by right-wing groups for implementing strict restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
  • Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta were also charged in the conspiracy plot.
  • Garbin said in his plea agreement that he and the other men trained for the operation at his property near Luther, Michigan, and constructed a structure that resembles Whitmer’s vacation home in Antrim County, according to AP.

The big picture: After the plot was foiled, Whitmer said former President Trump was partly responsible for fomenting anger against her coronavirus restrictions and for not strongly denouncing far-right extremist groups.

  • Trump faced criticism for encouraging the protests and calling on Whitmer to "give a little," tweeting at one point: "LIBERATE MICHIGAN."
  • Another seven men associated with the militia group Wolverine Watchmen were charged by Michigan's attorney general for training with Garbin and the others for a plot to attack the state Capitol building.

The readily available antidepressant fluvoxamine significantly reduced COVID-related hospitalizations, according to a large study published Wednesday.

Why it matters: The clinical trial suggests that a cheap, readily available drug could dramatically reduce serious illness and death when prescribed early.

NYC firefighters union urges members to defy mayor's vaccine mandate

The president of New York City's firefighters' union told reporters Wednesday that he's advised unvaccinated members to ignore Mayor Bill de Blasio's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for city workers, per Reuters.

Why it matters: Under De Blasio's order that's due to take effect Friday, unvaccinated city employees would be placed on unpaid leave. But Uniformed Firefighters Association head Andrew Ansbro said he told members that "if they choose to remain unvaccinated, they must still report for duty," according to Reuters.

Judge rejects Southwest pilots' challenge to vaccine mandate

A judge ruled that Southwest Airlines can mandate its 9,000 pilots to be vaccinated against COVID-19, declining a union request for a restraining order on the policy, per AP.

Details: U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn said in her ruling against the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association on Tuesday that the airline was meeting its goal on air transportation safety and "providing 'safe and reasonable working conditions' for pilots, by preventing the spread of disease" with the requirement, the Dallas Morning News noted.
