RFK site looms larger as D.C. construction slows

The big picture: The number of cranes in the sky is falling, as UrbanTurf noted last year.

• Just 3.6 million square feet of development broke ground last year — the lowest level since at least 2010, per a recent report from Washington D.C. Economic Partnership.
• This week, there's been a lot of chatter about another sign of the demise of D.C.'s building boom: The redevelopment of a gas station on U Street fizzled out because of market conditions.

Context: The broader RFK plan already calls for about 6,000 housing units around a 65,000-seat domed stadium.

• It'll span six districts and be several times the size of The Wharf.

Zoom in: Bowser's proposal would also add high-density development at the D.C. Armory, which will be moving its HQ elsewhere.

• The Armory parcel is next-door, but separate, from the stadium project, so it could become a neighborhood-serving development of its own.
• It sits across from the Festival Plaza on East Capitol Street that'll lead into the new Commanders stadium.
• On Sept. 3, the National Capital Planning Commission will hear a presentation about the Armory's future.

What's ahead: The Office of Planning is reviewing public feedback received on its RFK campus master plan in anticipation of unveiling a final version.
