St. Patrick's Day is March 17, which means it's time to find a proper Irish pub.

Why it matters: St. Patrick's Day is a major celebration for the Irish and their descendants — and a handful of D.C.-area pubs keep the traditions alive.

Between the lines: Some of the pubs below and many others have festivities planned through the weekend.

A few favorites for the big day:

🍻 The Dubliner and Kelly's Irish Times: These two classics by Union Station — dubbed "Little Dublin" — open early March 17 for morning pints, live music and Irish fare.

🍳 Boundary Stone: The Bloomingdale neighborhood pub opens at 2pm on the holiday with a proper Irish breakfast, food specials and $5 pints.

🎻 Irish Inn at Glen Echo: This Maryland favorite hosts a family-friendly celebration with music, dancing and Irish fare. Get a taste with this video on the Inn's 50+ years from co-owner Chris Hughes.

🇮🇪 Ireland's Four Provinces: Cork native Colm Dillon goes all out on Tuesday at "4Ps" in Falls Church with kegs & eggs (8–10am, walk-in), plus festive lunch, dinner and live music on the patio and in the pub.

🎶 Murphy's Grand Irish Pub: The Old Town classic opens at 9am on Tuesday with live music and Irish fare — including oysters from their own farm.
