Scoop: Mayoral candidate Kenyan McDuffie touts 24-hour fundraising record

Between the lines: Lewis George's campaign set its own launch record, hitting 1,000 D.C. donors in lightning speed — under five hours.

• With 1,870 local donors, she drew more than double McDuffie's count.

How it works: Both candidates are participating in the public Fair Elections Program, which matches D.C. resident donations up to $200 at a 5-to-1 rate.

• By Thursday afternoon, McDuffie's campaign said it had surpassed the required 1,000 D.C. resident donors to qualify for the matching funds.

What they're saying: "I am humbled by the historic level of support from my neighbors, especially at a time when so many families are having a hard time paying their bills, keeping their businesses open, or finding a job," McDuffie said in a statement.

• "This is a major movement that is still building," Lewis George's campaign chair Tommy Wells told Axios.

What's ahead: Affordability and Trump relations loom large.

• "I'll fight to knock down barriers that price people out," McDuffie said in a launch video.

About a thousand people joined Lewis George's launch party at Howard Theatre Wednesday night.

• Between chants of "JLG" and pledges to lower the cost of living, Lewis George's loudest cheers came after this: "We must end the cooperation between our police officers and ICE."
