How I Wake Up: MSNBC host Joy Reid

This has been an unprecedented election — OK, you can say that again. So what wakes up Joy Reid these days? "My unquiet mind. I just wake up automatically," the MSNBC host laughs.

Reid loves TV, but in search of a relaxing hobby, she's picking piano lessons back up after Tuesday. "I'm trying to not live in the news 24/7," she says, "because it will drive you mad."

Before she joins MSNBC's Decision 2024 coverage Tuesday evening, we caught up about how Joy begins her mornings:

😴 Wake-up time: 7:30am.

📲 First thing she does: Glass of water immediately — then scrolling her phone for breaking news, a habit that began during the whirlwind of the Donald Trump presidency.

☕️ Morning brew: Nescafe instant coffee.

📺 TV diet: "Morning Joe," and scanning CNN and "every so often" Fox News — getting a flavor of the day's conversation before her 11am show meeting.

Pro-tip: Listening to cable news shows on Sirius XM.

🍳 Breakfast: "I'm an egg girl" — scrambled or boiled.

💭 Thought bubble: "I'm a creature of routine," but this election is anything but: "I am going into this one with a lot more nerves."
