Maryland will decide on a ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights

Between the lines: A yes vote will effectively add the right to an abortion to the Maryland Constitution.

• The amendment "confirms an individual's fundamental right to reproductive freedom," which is defined to include the "ability to make and effectuate decisions to prevent, continue, or end the individual's pregnancy."

If it passes, it would make it much harder for future lawmakers to introduce restrictions on abortions.

The big picture: Ten other states also have abortion ballot measures in 2024.

The other side: The Maryland Catholic Conference says that enshrining abortion in the constitution will "take away the ability to really put in common-sense regulations into our state laws in the future," as the group's Maryland director Jenny Kraska told CBS.
