The DMV's Olympians are in Paris getting ready for the opening ceremony Friday afternoon β stars including seven-time, gold-winning swimmer Katie Ledecky and basketballer Kevin Durant.
Why it matters: There are 19 Olympians from the Washington region to root for in this year's games, which run through Aug. 11.
By the numbers: We have three swimmers joining Bethesda's Ledecky β Phoebe Bacon from Chevy Chase, Erin Gemmell from Potomac, and Torri Huske from Arlington.
- The area is well represented in U.S. national team soccer players: Kevin Paredes (South Riding, Virginia) and Griffin Yow (Clifton, Virginia) playing for the men's team and Emily Fox (Ashburn, Virginia) in the women's squad.
- Wrestler Helen Maroulis of Rockville, Maryland, is back for her third Olympics. In 2016, she became the first American woman to win the gold medal in freestyle wrestling.
Zoom in: Bethesda fencer Tatiana Nazlymov went to Georgetown Day School and picked up the sport when she was 9. She grew up fencing at her family's club in Bethesda, Nazlymov Fencing.
- The 19-year-old Princeton student is scheduled to compete on Monday and Saturday.
She told Axios last month that she's trying to keep the pressure low and focus on taking it all in. "I still have a lot of career ahead of me if I want to," said Nazlymov. "I'm really just there to enjoy the experience."
- That being said, she is excited about sightseeing in Paris β and the food, of course.
