Angie Craig posts big cash advantage in U.S. Senate race

U.S. Rep. Angie Craig has twice as much cash to spend as her closest competitor in the race to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Tina Smith.

Why it matters: The DFL primary battle between Craig and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, still over a year away, is expected to be one of the state's top watched races in 2026, as the DFL's moderate and progressive wings spar over a rare open Senate seat.

By the numbers: Craig, who represents a suburban Twin Cities swing district, reported bringing in over $1.4 million in a campaign finance filing due this week, ending the second quarter with $1.8 million cash on hand.

Her totals include a $370,000 personal loan and about $590,000 in cash she transferred from her U.S. House campaign account, along with assets like supporter email lists.

Flanagan, a favorite among progressive state legislators and leaders, raised just over $914,000, with about $780,000 in the bank.

Her campaign said over 90% of her contributions were $100 or less, meaning those smaller donors can be tapped again and again before hitting individual limits.

The other side: Republican Adam Schwarze reported just $76,000 in contributions, with $96,000 left to spend, and Royce White, the GOP's 2024 nominee, raised $115,000 and had about $183,000 in the bank.

What we're watching: Whether Republicans can recruit a top-tier candidate to attract national money and attention to a race that political forecasters currently rate as "Lean Democratic."
