Minnesota DFL chair Ken Martin announces bid to lead DNC

Zoom in: Martin, first elected as Minnesota Democrats' leader in 2011, is a strong fundraiser and the longest-serving chair in the state party's history.

• Democrats have won every statewide race — and secured trifectas at the State Capitol twice — during his time at the helm.
• In addition to his state role, he serves as a vice-chair of the DNC and president of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.

Between the lines: Martin's record of winning in the upper midwest could appeal to Democrats looking to strengthen the party's appeal with rural or moderate voters across the "Blue Wall."

What he's saying: ""If you're looking for a creature of D.C., that's not me. But I do know how the DNC works, and how it isn't working," Martin said in an announcement video published early Tuesday.

• "I know how to listen to voters, to those who feel cast aside by Democrats and to the people working hard within our party who have great ideas."

Reality check: While Minnesota Democrats currently hold all statewide elected offices, the party wasn't immune from this year's red wave.

• Republicans picked up enough state House seats to end the DFL's full control at the Capitol, and President-elect Trump out-performed his 2020 numbers in much of the state.

State of play: Current DNC chair Jamie Harrison, elected in 2021, is unlikely to seek a second term.

• Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley announced his bid to replace him Monday.
• Other prominent Democrats reportedly considering a run include former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler and Rahm Emmanuel.
