How it's done: The program connects Chick-fil-A locations with nearby nonprofits, typically within a 5- to 10-mile radius, that help extend the impact of the restaurants' unused surplus ingredients.

Why it's important: 1 in 7 adults experience food insecurity in the Bay Area. These needs are real, urgent and local.

The story: In the Bay Area, 29 restaurants participate in Chick-fil-A Shared Table — an impact that has created 266,000 meals for those in need.

• That's nearly 300,000 pounds of food diverted from landfills with the partnership of 19 local nonprofit organizations.

What they're saying: "We take the donated items that we receive and we cook up a warm meal for individuals to come in, sit down and take the load off the day," Chick-fil-A nonprofit partner CityTeam Ministries' development associate Austin Regan said. "What Chick-fil-A is doing for us, we're able to give back to the individuals on the street."
