Anthropic filed for its highly anticipated IPO Monday, suggesting its shares could begin trading before Thanksgiving.
Why it matters: The Claude maker's public debut could create a massive wave of new wealth in San Francisco, boosting the local economy while potentially making an already expensive city even pricier.
By the numbers: Anthropic didn't say how much it plans to raise, but there's speculation it could seek around $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation.
- That would make it more than 20 times larger than any previous IPO by a San Francisco-based startup, Ted Egan, the city's chief economist, told Axios.
Zoom in: Egan told Axios that employees and early investors who cash out their shares could pour some of that wealth into expensive homes, restaurants and other local businesses.
- The city's luxury housing market is already seeing prices climb rapidly.
- While the IPO itself may not directly drive up rents, a successful debut could fuel more AI investment, bringing new startups and high earners to the city and putting further pressure on housing costs.
"There is potentially a lot of wealth that's going to be turned into liquidity, and if some share of that hits the local economy, that's going to make a noticeable impact," Egan said.
Yes, but: Not everyone stands to benefit equally. Anthropic's seven founders own roughly half the company, Egan said, while employees hold varying amounts of stock.
- It's also unclear how much of that newfound wealth would actually be spent in San Francisco.
The big picture: AI has already helped drive San Francisco's economic recovery. A successful IPO could keep that momentum going, but disappointing investor sentiment could slow venture capital investment in the city, Egan said.
Zoom out: AI giants need more investment as massive revenue isn't keeping pace with spending.
- Anthropic reported an $80.75 billion net loss on $16.29 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026 — about $6.6 million in revenue per employee.
- The company says its AI could help cure diseases and tackle major challenges, but acknowledges it could also pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity."
Flashback: Anthropic filed confidential IPO paperwork in early June, just weeks after OpenAI did.
- The ChatGPT maker doesn't expect to go public until next year.
The bottom line: Anthropic's IPO could give San Francisco's recovery another boost, but whether that means lasting growth — or another wave of tech wealth and rising housing costs — remains to be seen.
