I admit, I was a bit hesitant to write about this place. Some San Francisco spots are so special that you almost don't want to let the secret out.
🎹 Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge has long been one of those places that inspires a little protectiveness.
It's delightfully quirky. The dimly lit bar is packed floor to ceiling with vintage lamps, records, oddball collectibles and more than a decade of character.
The crowd is part of the charm. On any given night, neighborhood regulars, musicians, artists and first-timers settle in together, creating the kind of scene that feels far removed from the AI boom driving the city's latest affordability crunch.
Local musicians Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert performed the night I most recently stopped by. Smith's blues-and-swing vocals filled the room while Siebert worked the lounge's signature Hammond organ.
🍹What to order: My go-to drink is a Pimm's No. 1 cup, though you can never go wrong with their signature G&T or red margarita.
🕰️ Fun fact: Even though The Royal Cuckoo has been open since 2010, the building itself has been home to a neighborhood bar since 1881.
👏 Congrats to Kate D. for being the first reader to guess correctly and for reminding me that I'm "not supposed to tell everyone!" I get it. Some places feel like secrets worth keeping.
