More big music festivals may be coming to Golden Gate Park each summer thanks to an agreement that would let the Outside Lands promoter host additional concerts through 2029.
Why it matters: City leaders see the shows as a way of generating revenue for parks and local businesses while building on the success of Outside Lands. But for some westside residents, it could also mean more weeks of traffic, noise and road closures.
Driving the news: The Board of Supervisors this week approved a resolution allowing the Recreation and Park Department to issue a new permit to Another Planet Entertainment, the San Francisco Standard reports.
- The three-year permit, which has an option to be extended to nine years, gives the festival organizer the ability to host a second weekend of a multi-day concerts at the park, beginning next year.
- The concerts would use the festival's existing stage and infrastructure before it's taken down, avoiding the need for a separate buildout.
By the numbers: The park concert series has drawn about 55,000 attendees a day since launching in 2024 and generated nearly $2.9 million in permit fees over the past two years, per the Recreation and Park Department.
- Under the proposed agreement, Another Planet would pay the city at least $1.53 million a year — or 5% of concert revenue, whichever is higher — through 2029. Those payments would increase if the deal is renewed, per the Standard.
- The deal would also direct more funding to park improvements and Richmond and Sunset neighborhood projects and continue three free concerts elsewhere in the city.
Yes, but: Not everyone is asking for an encore.
- Last summer's run of three consecutive concert weekends — including Dead & Company, Outside Lands and a concert by Zach Bryan and Kings of Leon — prompted neighborhood complaints over congestion, parking shortages, litter and late-night noise.
- Cumulatively, they generated $193 million in revenue for the city.
The bottom line: The potential new concert series could be another boost for the city's entertainment scene, but one that's likely to renew debate over how much activity the park and its surrounding neighborhoods should host.
