Spamalot delivers King Arthur with jazz hands

• The comedic beats are there, and the performances — particularly Sean Bell as Sir Robin and Leo Roberts as Sir Galahad — are spot-on tributes to the original.

Yes, but: While Spamalot was written by Monty Python alum Eric Idle, this is a decidedly American production — right down to the Vegas-style showgirls.

• It's tongue in cheek (The Lady of the Lake demands more stage time for her Celine-level singing) but it still demands that you succumb to the Yanks' interpretation of what the Brits did best.

• If watching Americans interpret 50-year-old British comedy sounds like Spanish Inquisition-level torture, this show isn't for you.

The bottom line: Watching Spamalot is like turning the pages of a King Arthur book right after eating Arby's: the knights and maidens are there, but the words have gotten a little smudged.
