Haight Street was absolutely jumping Saturday night as Deadheads came out to remember Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, a week after his death on Jan. 10.
While it was just a fraction of the 25,000 fans who'd gathered earlier in the day for a memorial service at Civic Center Plaza, the impromptu gathering on the corner of Haight and Masonic streets brought out parents, teenagers and a fair share of folks who looked like they may well have been there since '69.
The crowd celebrated Weir's legacy by dancing to live renditions of songs like "Sugar Magnolia" and "All Along the Watchtower."
💭 Claire's thought bubble: I had never heard of the Grateful Dead before moving to the city. But dancing in the street with a bunch of strangers felt like a fitting tribute and just about the most San Francisco night you could imagine.
When the band wrapped up and we started to walk away, I heard one fan yell, "Three more sets!"
