Crime fell in 2025 but shoplifting surged in 2 neighborhoods

By the numbers: While property crime in the rest of the city fell in 2025, SoMa and Mission bucked the trend — primarily due to larceny theft, according to police data analyzed by the San Francisco Chronicle.

• Larceny theft jumped 59% in SoMa and 34% in Mission Bay from 2024 to 2025, with shoplifting reports driving the uptick.
• In SoMa, shoplifting reports were concentrated at Fourth and Mission streets, which recorded a nearly 600% surge in reported larceny thefts from 2024 to 2025, per the Chronicle. That intersection is home to the Metreon Target.
• In Mission Bay, they were concentrated at Fourth and King streets, where a Safeway is located. Police recorded a 150% increase in reports there.

The big picture: The police department escalated crackdowns on drug markets and homeless encampments in the Tenderloin last year, but residents have expressed concern that they've simply moved into neighboring areas.

• Residents of District 6, which includes SoMa and Mission Bay, voiced these frustrations last month at a town hall with city officials, leading San Francisco Police Chief Paul Yep to acknowledge that "the numbers don't matter if you don't feel safe in the street at the end of the day."
