A new Vanderbilt University campus is coming to SF

Driving the news: The Nashville-headquartered college will operate a full-time residential campus in San Francisco for undergraduate and graduate students, though academic programming and regulatory approvals are not yet finalized.

• The deal comes a year after Lurie's team began exploring the possibility of bringing another university to San Francisco.

What they're saying: "San Francisco stands for invention and discovery that changes the world," Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said at a press conference Tuesday.

• "That is our ambition ... create a place that creates creators," he added, pointing to the city's startup ecosystem, concentration of global technology firms and talent and long legacy in arts and design.

Between the lines: CCA, San Francisco's oldest art school, has struggled to recover from years-long financial challenges amid a sharp decline in enrollment.

• Its shutdown follows a string of other school and gallery closures across the city.

What's next: Vanderbilt expects to open its San Francisco campus for students in the 2027-2028 academic year.

• CCA will continue instruction through the end of the 2026-2027 school year, after which the school will help students transfer to other accredited institutions, according to president David Howse.
