How to recycle your Christmas tree in San Francisco

How it works: Set your tree next to your curbside collection bins the night before your regular service day.

• Trees must be bare and unbagged.
• Trees taller than 6 feet must be cut in half. Any branches or sections smaller than 3 feet can go into your compost bin.
• Natural wreaths are accepted if all metal frames and wires are removed.
• After collecting the trees, Recology will transport them to a composting facility.

Be smart: Make sure all decorations have been removed first. Tinsel, ribbon, twine and yarn go in the garbage, as they can get tangled in the machines that sort recyclables and cause the whole process to shut down.

• Flocked trees (those adorned with fake snow) must be discarded as trash and placed inside the bin.
• Broken string lights should never go in the recycling or landfill bin because the wiring can damage equipment and contaminate materials. Find a proper drop-off site at SFRecycles.org or drop them off at any Cole Hardware store through Jan. 30.
