Bay Area nonprofits are setting ambitious fundraising targets for Giving Tuesday this year as they push to meet rising community needs.
Why it matters: A single day of charity can have a profound ripple effect on someone's life.
- Amid federal funding cuts, organizations are reporting higher demand and fewer resources, prompting a renewed push for donations.
State of play: Giving Tuesday is among the biggest fundraising days of the year for many organizations and is meant to encourage people to support charities, donate to causes they care about or volunteer in their communities.
Here's a non-exhaustive list featuring a range of local nonprofits:
🏡 Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, which builds and preserves affordable housing across San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties, is hoping to raise $25,000.
🍎 San Francisco-Marin Food Bank serves about 36,000 families a week. Every $1 donated Tuesday will be tripled thanks to a $500,000 matching donation.
🩺 San Francisco Community Health Center provides medical, dental and mental health services to vulnerable communities, immigrants, low-income people of color, LGBTQ+ residents and unhoused people.
🎙️ KQED faces an $8 million budget gap in its annual budget due to federal funding cuts to public media, which the station says is making this year's donations even more critical.
👥 Shanti Project offers emotional support, medical care navigation and assistance to San Franciscans with serious illness, disability and aging challenges.
👫 Larkin Street Youth Services provides housing, food and employment and education opportunities to San Francisco youth facing homelessness.
🐾 SF SPCA provides veterinary care, pet adoption, spay and neuter services, training and more to keep animals healthy and in loving homes.
🎨 Leap Arts in Education brings arts education into K–8 classrooms across the Bay Area, in disciplines including music, dance and creative writing.
❤️🩹 La Casa De Las Madres connects survivors of domestic violence to services.
⚖️ Immigration Institute of the Bay Area provides low-cost and free legal services to help immigrants and refugees secure legal status.
