Forget Kansas — right now, there's no place like San Francisco.
The big picture: "Wicked: For Good" premieres in movie theaters Friday and the city's theatrically inclined crowd is rolling out more sparkle than a Glinda gown to celebrate.
It's the sequel to last year's blockbuster "Wicked" and is based on the second act of the stage musical.
- The film picks up where the first left off, continuing the story of Elphaba and Glinda — two witches bound by friendship but divided by fate.
- Branded a villain and hunted across Oz, Elphaba becomes a fugitive determined to expose corruption. Meanwhile, Glinda, hailed as "good," ascends to power and grapples with the moral compromises that come with it.
What they're saying: The excitement for its release has been evident around town. A week before opening, the sequel was already Alamo Drafthouse's fifth-highest-grossing movie of the year thanks to presales, said Tyler Phillips, a Bay Area-based film programmer there.
- At this pace, it's expected to be the theater chain's top-performer this year, he said.
- "It's going to blow everything else out in the water," Phillips added. "This is going to be everybody's biggest movie of the year."
