Lowriders, mariachi music, street parties and weeks of festivities will fill San Francisco over the next month as the city celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month.
Why it matters: Latinos make up nearly 16% of the city's population and have long shaped San Francisco, particularly the Mission District — from powering labor movements and economic growth to enriching its culinary identity.
Driving the news: The month, which San Francisco dubs Latino Heritage Month, runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. ("Hispanic" describes people from Spanish-speaking countries, while "Latino" refers to people from Latin America.)
