San Francisco will kickoff a new film screening series this month with free movie nights in Union Square Plaza as part of the city's push to reenergize its downtown core.
State of play: "Cinema on the Square" screenings start August 16 with "Mrs. Doubtfire", followed by "Big Hero 6" on Sept. 20 and "The Birds" on Oct. 4.
Between the lines: Each night will include pre-show activities sponsored by Alamo Drafthouse with trivia, prizes and contests.
The debut event will also feature a "Mrs. Doubtfire" look-a-like contest at 7pm.
What they're saying: ""When downtown is dynamic, visitors come to our city and support our businesses and restaurants — that's how we support our economic recovery," Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement.
What to expect: Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and dress in warm layers. A limited number of seats will be available.
