Pacifica's beloved dog surfing contest returns this weekend

Between the lines: The competition features eight categories on weight, best stand-up paddle, tandem dog heat and tandem dog and human contest.

• The two highest scoring competitors from each heat — except tandem challenges — advance to the all-around surfing championship.
• Contestants are judged on technique, skill, style and their sheer dogged determination to stay on the board.
• The event also includes a costume contest, doggy wellness fair with checkups, massage and fitness activities, and more. A happy hour at Grape in the Fog will be held afterward from 4 to 6pm.

Catch up quick: The event in Pacifica started in 2016 and has been a fan favorite ever since. Previous winners include two-time champion Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie; Skyler, a cattle dog from Santa Cruz; and Cacau, a chocolate Labrador from Brazil.

• The first dog surfing contest — held at Loews Coronado in San Diego in 2006 — was dreamed up by the author of "The Dog's Guide to Surfing" and later inspired a global wave of similar competitions, from California to Australia.
