A scavenger hunt has turned SF into a puzzle playground

A new scavenger hunt has overtaken San Francisco.
State of play: More than 1,300 accounts — an estimated 2,000 people due to participants playing in groups — joined the Pursuit competition over the weekend, co-creator Riley Walz told Axios via email.
- "It has snowballed and now it's way bigger than we expected," Walz said.
Between the lines: The monthlong scavenger hunt was created by 15 friends to encourage more people to explore San Francisco, co-creator Athena Leong told KQED.
- "We want them to see the beauty in this amazing city. There are so many hidden gems that you might not find unless you really go look, you know?" she said.
- It consists of 12 puzzles or missions, as the organizers describe them.
How it works: Text 415-888-9518 to start receiving clues. If you missed the first few clues, don't fret. You don't have to complete them to access the rest.
The intrigue: Pursuit's first iteration drew 950 participants last year, per Walz.
- Missions involved searching for special symbols in Chinatown and using the correct code word to get a fortune cookie that hid another clue.
What's next: The quests will end in early August. "That's all I can really say for now," Walz teased.
