Driving the news: Roughly 5 million people took part in Saturday's "No Kings" demonstrations in more than 2,100 cities and towns.

Zoom in: Tens of thousands of San Franciscans took to the streets, and a few hundred gathered at Ocean Beach to create a massive human banner.

Yes, but: While demonstrations across the city were largely considered peaceful, a driver in the Mission District struck four protesters in a hit-and-run that police are investigating as "a possible intentional act."

Zoom out: The nationwide demonstrations come a week after the federal administration deployed some 4,000 National Guard members to anti-ICE protests in LA amid an escalating feud with the state's top leaders.

• Those tensions intensified Sunday after President Trump ordered ICE to "expand efforts to detain and deport" undocumented immigrants in Democratic-run cities, including in California where he's even called for Gov. Gavin Newsom's arrest.
