California leads continental U.S. in Asian population

The U.S.'s Asian American population has more than doubled since the turn of the century, according to Pew Research.
- There are now nearly 25 million Asian Americans living in the U.S. as of 2023, or about 7% of the total population.
State of play: California has the largest share of Asian Americans among continental U.S. states.
- 18.4% — or about 7 million — Californians identified as Asian in 2023, according to census data.
- At 57%, Hawai'i has the highest proportion of Asian Americans among all states. Washington (13.1%) and Nevada (12.2%) trail California.
- Meanwhile, 37.2% of San Francisco residents identify as Asian, with Chinese people comprising the largest ethnic group.
