Camping is a great way to explore the outdoors and once you have the basic necessities, an adventure awaits.
Why it matters: If you head into the wilderness, you'll want to be prepared.
Zoom in: For car camping, a tent, sleeping bag, first-aid kit, cookware essentials and a light backpack to carry water, snacks, sunscreen and lip balm are must-haves.
Here are a few more items to consider that could be especially useful in California.
🥾 Shoes: Hiking boots are not always necessary if you're on a well-traveled trail that isn't too rugged, but trail shoes with a little extra tread go a long way.
- Bring a pair of sandals for the campground or water shoes if you plan on swimming in any lakes or rivers.
🧢 Accessories: A sun hat or bandana is especially important on a hot day, particularly if you're going to be in unshaded areas.
- A long sleeve sun shirt can also help prevent a nasty sunburn.
- Don't forget a headlamp, either. Keep it in your backpack just in case a hike takes longer than you think and keep it close by for any late-night walks to the bathroom.
😴 Air mattress: For car-camping enthusiasts, a state-of-the-art air mattress designed for the outdoors makes sleeping far more comfortable.
- Folks on a budget can consider a sleeping pad instead. Closed-cell foam or an inflatable pad are the most common options.
- Plus: One of the best parts of car camping — as opposed to backpacking —is the ability to bring a regular pillow.
🪑 Camp chair: Having a comfortable place to sit and unwind by the campfire is non-negotiable.

💦 Water bottle: Hydration is key to staying safe during summertime hot spells.
- Opt for one of many top-tier insulated options to keep liquids cold, hydration packs for longer hikes or light and space-saving collapsable versions.
🧥 Lightweight fleece or jacket: It can get chilly in the evening, so bringing a versatile, non-bulky jacket is a must-have.
