Harbaugh Bowl: A clash of brothers and heartbreak for the 49ers

Flashback: At that point in 2013, the younger brother Jim had served as the 49ers' head coach for just two years. But he'd helped turn a struggling team around and was en route to his first Super Bowl as a head coach.

• He and John were the first pair of brothers to serve as NFL head coaches in the same season.
• The Niners had lost once already to the Ravens during a Thanksgiving showdown in 2011. But Jim's decision to replace quarterback Alex Smith with Colin Kaepernick, proved successful in getting the team to the championship.

Yes, but: Despite the 49ers' third quarter comeback, the Ravens eked out a win 34-31.

• And when John crossed the field to shake Jim's hand, it wasn't the customary exchange seen between other coaches after a game.
• "That's a little different; that's a little tougher," John recalled during a speech at Miami University the following year.
• Though John tried to go in for a hug, Jim resolutely declared, "There will be no hug," according to John.

What they said: "There's probably not a day that goes by that I don't think about that game and what we could've done down at the end," Jim told the Associated Press last February. "Just wanted another shot at it, take another crack."

• "My brother, my best friend, I love him, I'm proud of him. He earned that and he deserved that and his team did. ... When I say it motivates me every day, it's every day."

Fun fact: Though his family moved around a lot when they were growing up, Jim finished secondary education at Palo Alto High School. He often returned to informally coach his alma mater's football team when he worked in San Francisco.

• John has remained with the Ravens, while Jim is now the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
