Thousands of people flocked to Dolores Park on Easter Sunday to celebrate what's become a storied tradition: The Hunky Jesus costume contest.
State of play: The humorous and irreverent event is hosted annually by The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charity and advocacy organization founded by a group of cheeky drag nuns in 1979.
Driving the news: The winner of Sunday's infamous contest was Cowboy Carter Jesus, who was very much inspired by Beyonce's most recent album.
Dollar Store Candle Mary received top honors as the winner of the accompanying Foxy Mary contest.
What they're saying: "Our theme this year is 'There's No Easter Without the T' in recognition of how the trans community is under a particular attack from the federal government right now," Sister Vina Sinfurrs told Axios. "Our oath is to promulgate universal joy and to expiate stigmatic guilt."
Catch up quick: Since its inception nearly five decades ago, the event has grown to a large celebration, with a focus on inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Today, the organization dedicates much of its time to promoting safe sex, advocating on behalf of the queer community and fundraising for LGBTQ+ causes.
