Five new members have joined the San Francisco Board of Supervisors this year and we're introducing you to them.
Zoom in: Chyanne Chen represents District 11, which encompasses neighborhoods like Excelsior, Ingleside and Outer Mission.
- The longtime labor leader and community organizer who moved to the U.S. from China at 15 is known for championing progressive policies that support working families.
State of play: We asked her what her top priority is, what she loves most about her district and what constituents might not know about her.
- Responses have been edited for length and clarity.
Top priority: Affordable before and after school programming.
What she's saying: "Our youth deserve more enrichment programming and our working families need a reliable and safe place for their children to go before and after school to relieve pressure on pickup schedules," she told Axios via email.
What she loves about District 11: The people, for being "incredibly generous."
- "They're the first to help out their neighbors and invest in different self-organized projects to beautify the community and make it safer and more accessible for everyone," she said.
Most important issue: More visibility and recognition for her district.
- "Regardless of the policy or issue area, District 11 has always had to fight to be seen. The most important thing that we can do is make sure that everyone, every department, every philanthropist knows that our neighborhoods have so much to offer," she added.
Interesting fact: She grew up in a small village in China, "where everything was communal" and "everyone took care of each other, everyone looked after each other's children and seniors, everyone shared what they had."
- In San Francisco, she's been able to recreate that sense of community by living in close proximity to her parents and friends.
