Thousands attend SF New Year's Day party

About 8,000 people rang in the new year at one of San Francisco's biggest annual block parties, per the organizers.

Why it matters: Breakfast of Champions began at Pier 23 in 2001 and has had many homes over the past two decades, but has never failed to bring together a vast community of party-goers and Burners who embody the city's free-spirit mentality and belief in radical self expression.

This year the event took place at Great Northern.

What they're saying: The party, known for its festival-like vibe with 10 stages and 18 hours of continuous music, represents the best of San Francisco's artistic and underground electronic scene, according to Brett Cline, special events director at Great Northern.

Keith Harris, known as DJ Deckard, is part of Space Cowboys — the collective responsible for the funky, experimental and drum-driven rhythms playing across the dance floor.
He said he's proud to be part of a historic event that keeps thriving even as festivals are canceled and the music industry faces challenges.
"We humbly offer this up as our way to celebrate and people just keep coming back and really, really enjoy it," he said.
